Developing research experience

Our students are motivated to dedicate part of their time to actively develop research experience. Our program has a course especially designed for such purpose: “Advanced Research,” where students are paired with a faculty advisor to develop their own ideas into a research paper.

Also, students are motivated to become Research or Teaching Assistants. These are paid positions where students get more closely involved in research projects and teaching activities led by one of our faculty members and researchers affiliated to the Center for Economic Research. Researchers from the Center for Economic Research dedicate most of their time to develop researcher papers that are sent to leading peer-reviewed journals. Being an RA or TA gives a unique opportunity to gain insights on how an academic career develops in practice. Having one of the best faculty groups in the region (based on the number and quality of the publications), this is a unique learning opportunity in our institute.

All students interested on becoming an RA or TA should send an email expressing their interest and availability to Julieta Valdes (julieta.valdes@itam.mx) and Arturo Aguilar (arturo.aguilar@itam.mx).

Research seminar

Every Friday during the school semester, an invited researcher from an Economics Department from another university presents his current research work. This is organized by the Center for Economic Research and has enabled the Center to position itself as one of the leading research institutes at Mexico and Latin America. These events give our students exposure to professional work. This way our students have a clear idea about the rigorous requirements entailed in professional academic work.

International Students

We welcome applications of students from all nationalities. ITAM is a non-discriminatory institution which welcomes diversity. We provide international students with support in different aspects:

Legal counseling / migration

Visa requirements are often based on bilateral agreements between countries and can change unexpectedly. ITAM will provide letter of acceptance to obtain a student visa, but all prospective exchange students should check with their nearest Mexican consulate about visa requirements.

The Center of Access to Justice (Centro de Acceso a la Justicia) is managed by ITAM’s Law Department and provides general legal counseling and support in migration aspects.

Housing

Housing is not owned or operated by ITAM but the International Office provides assistance by finding off-campus housing options. There are many fully furnished student residences within walking distance from ITAM. Options depend on price range and features desired by the student. The International Office works with each individual student to find the preferred accommodation but once selected, the student is directly responsible for the lease.

Buddy program

When travelling to an unknown country it is possible to encounter unexpected circumstances that would be much easier to solve if you have aid from a local resident. The ITAM Buddy Program brings together student volunteers who help our international students become familiar with ITAM and the Mexican culture and to make the most of their stay in Mexico City. The Mexican student volunteers will help international students since they arrive to Mexico City and will provide basic information about life at Mexico City.
